When Pigs Fly Day 3 - Village In The Snowfall Cross Stitch

Welcome to Day 3 of When Pigs Fly. This blog hop is hosted by Joan of Moosestash Quilting and is an opportunity to dig out and finish those PIGS (Projects In Grocery Sacks), UFOS (UnFinished Objects), and WIPS (Works In Progress). I chuckle every time I look at Joan's cute logo. Check out the list of participants below as well as this Pinterest board set up by Joan!

While looking around at UFOs in my closet I happened upon a cross stitch table topper, Village in the Snowfall by Herrschners, that I started in 2020 and only completed about 1/3 of it before I put it away. Why not finish it and actually have a finished project for Christmas!

Instead of the white floss provided with the kit, I used DMC's Etoile Mouline in Blanc to provide a little sparkle (although you really can't see it from the photos).

My finished piece - see the color difference between the website listing and the actual fabric?

Finishing this UFO, I discovered three things:
1) as you can see from the two photos above, the fabric on the bottom is not the pretty, dark blue that appears on Herrschners' website in the top photo; instead, it is dark navy.
2) I found that I do not care for stamped cross stitch, as it does not provide the exact finished look of counted cross stitch.
3) I wish I stitched it with a fusible interfacing and a coordinating back. (I might still do this!)
But I am still very happy with it - it will make an awesome table topper for Christmas!

After I finished the table topper, I decided to go ahead and start working a flimsy that I finished last year for Melva's Pieces of the Santa Fe Trail SAL. I had to add a couple borders to bring it up to the lap-size I need. It is now on Longmire the longarm, and I will do a separate post when I am done!

Thank you Joan for providing this excuse opportunity to finish up some of our UFOs! Here is the list of participants for you to visit today and tomorrow:

  1. That is a huge difference in color on the cross stitch, but it is still a gorgeous piece. I can imagine the sparkly thread adds some fun to it! I'm terrible at counted cross stitch so the preprinted stuff would be up my alley. Your quilt on Longmire looks incredible and "yay" for you that you brought it closer to a finish. Thanks for sharing!

  4. The cross-stitch tabletopper is beautiful, Linda! I love the sweet design, and so fun that you used sparkly floss, too. It's so great that you're finishing Pieces of the Santa Fe Trail, too! Can't wait to see your finish!

  5. I'm so glad you had an excuse/opportunity to finish your projects for us! LOL!! The table topper is beautiful, but the fabric is definitely not what they showed in their catalog. I think adding the thread with extra sparkle was a great move! Looking forward to seeing your SAL quilt, when it comes off the longarm!

  6. I love your Christmas tabletopper, it's beautiful! It's frustrating when we buy a kit and it isn't like the picture shows. That's why I seldom order fabrics online. Happy stitching!

  7. Sweet table topper! (I have never liked stamped cross stitch either--prefer counted, if I am going to do it.) The quilt is going to be beautiful! Thanks for sharing!

  9. I think your table topper is beautiful. I truly like the darker fabric better and I imagine the Etoile floss looks great on it.

  11. Love that table topper. So pretty.

  12. What a perfectly wonderful table topper. Not especially good to compare yours and theirs but I do understand your three points and agree with them, too. What I've learned is that 'kits' don't always look the way I want them and/or the amount of fabric is off. I buy the pattern and then the supplies separately - that makes me happier.

  13. Very pretty! I actually prefer the darker fabric, since it provides great contrast with your stitching. Congratulations on your finish.

  15. Hmmm, I actually like the navy blue better. It's a beautiful piece, either way. The quilt looks great, and I like the way you fasten it to the bars.

  16. Linda - I couldn't stop laughing at PIGS. (I had read the other terms before, but PIGS was new and oh-so-appropriate - I will admit to several PIGS at the moment! That is why I am so grateful that my sister-in-law recently gave me a new stitching bag - at least one PIGS has been saved!) I also am not a fan of stamped cross-stitch! Thanks for visiting my blog and leaving a comment!

  18. (Little Penpen) I’ve been following this series of PIGS post and wanted to leave a comment. When I got to your sewing room photo, my eyes fell on the Psalm 23 sampler on the wall. I have the exact sampler on my bedroom wall, even my frame looks like yours. I ordered the kit from eBay and did it a few years ago. I enjoy that type of stamped stitching, but I’ve had others that were awful to stitch.

  20. Linda, that table topper is beautiful, even if the background wasn't as depicted! It looks so peaceful and serene. I love that you added a little sparkle with the different thread instead of the white. I know you will enjoy it during the Christmas season. Looking forward to seeing your finished Pieces of the Past quilt. That is one of mine that's in a bag waiting to be started!

    1. I always found that true with Herschner's - fabrics and colors just not the same. Still, it's a very pretty piece.

  22. Hi Linda! I think that table topper is gorgeous but I am shocked at the color difference in the fabric. That is a bit misleading and outright false advertising. I still have my Pieces of the Past quilt top to get finished, so I'm looking forward to seeing your Pieces of the Santa Fe Trail. This was a fun little blog hop! {{Hugs}} a bunch. ~smile~ Roseanne

  23. What a great idea to finish that table topper so you have it for Christmas. I can see the shine in your photos. Also, love seeing your version of Melva's blocks on the frame. I have to quilt a big one but haven't used my frame like this in awhile....do you baste?

  24. Beautiful table topper - Cudo's for getting it done. On to the quilting of the top! Hugs

  25. Your cross stitch table topper is beautiful. I like the sound of the thread you used, a shame about the background fabric but you still have a gorgeous piece.

  27. I adore this little table topper. I would love to have that pattern and I know what you mean about stamped pieces. Though I will happily stitch that if the time comes and I can't manage the counted.
